Metal Sheet Roofing for your Lovely Home!

Imagine what would’ve happened if your home encompassed just four walls and had absolutely no roof? Scorching sun would stream through the open area and would bake you into little tartlets. Birds and animals would make your home a living zoo. To protect yourself and your cocoon from these hazards, a roof is a must. It is this element that completes your home guaranteeing you safety for a long time. Roofs can be of various types. In olden days, people would build their homes with mud and roofs were made of clay tiles. However, as men became more civilized and as technology got the better of people, roofing with different materials came into existence; metal sheet roofing being one of them. Metals are considered durable and long lasting. They can withstand the pressures of the environment and are considered one of the best solutions for roofing problems.

If you thought that metals being used for roofing are a recent phenomenon, it is time you mull over it and get your facts right. Metal sheet roofing is very old and dates back to the 3rd century BC. The Loha Maha Paya temple in Sri Lanka had copper roofs adorning the structure. The European medieval architecture boasts of copper roofing and the alloys of copper were also used to make strong and durable roofs. Metal sheets and tiles were an integral part in the making of Cathedrals and Castles which can still be seen today. These are lightweight and sturdy and can be used for centuries together. The existence of these cathedrals and castles is proof enough.

Metal sheets not only provide durability but they are also a solution to increase the attractive quotient. Today, a plethora of colour and design options are available to choose from. Several textures are available which can make your home look trendy, chic and modern or medieval, traditional and old school; you just have to make a choice as per your taste. If you want the robustness of the metal but you do not wish for the roof to look like one, you can change its appearance by making it look like it’s been made of clay tiles or of wood. This way, you get the strength of the metal and feel of the clay or wooden tiles.

Whether it is being used for homes or for offices, schools or for churches, metal roofing goes well with all kinds of architectural structures. Metal roofs have practically low cost of maintenance. They can withstand the worst of natural and environmental hazards and are also environment friendly. Although it has several benefits, metal sheet roofing also has certain shortcomings. Certain metals like steel are prone to rusting, thus increasing the overall maintenance cost. Copper and lead roofs often fall prey to metal thieves. Usually, metal roofs create loud sounds during rainstorms; having said that, it should also be noted that nobody or nothing is perfect. You just need to be wise enough to choose the metal appropriately and maintain it from time to time.

  5. I am considering a metal roof for my unheated pole barn to go over a leaky asphalt roof. Is this a good idea or should the old shingles come up first?
