Things to Know About Andropause

Men go through a stage called Andropause when they reach a certain age. Aging males usually experience a decrease in strength and energy level, and this is primarily due to a drop in the production of hormones.

Facts to Know
Andropause is also called ADAM or androgen decline in the aging male, late onset hypogonadism, and climacteric Andropause. Unlike menopause where the change happens abruptly, it is not the same with Andropause. In fact, this condition happens gradually and most men will hardly even know it. Statistics show that around 2%-5% of men have this condition between the ages forty to forty-nine, but the percentage is higher among men with ages 70 to over 80 years old.

The Symptoms
How will you know if Andropause has started? Here are the most common symptoms that men experience:
  • Diminished erectile quality or sexual desire
  • Changes in mood
  • Reduced lean body mass, strength, and muscle mass
  • Decreased bone density
  • Hair loss, particularly in the body
  • Internal organs are surrounded with fats
Men will not experience these symptoms all at the same time. The effects of Andropause will tend to vary among men. Some might experience one or two of the symptoms while others might experience any of it minimally. As long as you’re aware of the condition and that you are already aging, you can tell if you have the symptoms.

Visit a Doctor
The testosterone hormones are very important in men in maintaining proper functioning of the muscle cells, brain, bone, and prostate. Oftentimes, a blood test is necessary to determine if a person is undergoing Andropause. If tests show that you have 200ng/dl or lower, the testosterone production has decreased. Some of these tests include analog free testosterone, bioavailable testosterone, and free testosterone. You have to pick a lab setting that works for you.

The good news is that Andropause can be treated through hormone replacement therapy. You have to keep in mind that once you start with the therapy, it must be continued for life. You should be prepared to commit to the therapy and monitoring if you don’t want to experience any of the symptoms.

Androgen Info
Androgen is produced in a male’s testes and adrenal gland. Men need androgen to maintain spermatogenesis, in determining the gender of a male fetus, and in sexual maturation. As men grow older, they are able to control their sex drives and potency.

Androgen affects sexual function, bones, muscle, prostate, bone marrow, and the central nervous system. It is also responsible for determining the secondary characteristics of men such as pattern baldness and body hair.

At the onset of Andropause, the leydic cells in the testes don’t produce adequate testosterone and because of this, the conversion of the hormones to DHT and estradiol is also affected.

If you are concerned about the symptoms and you’re not ready to admit that you are aging, you can consult a doctor to find out if you indeed have Andropause. This is not a life threatening condition, but since men value their sexual status, a lot of people seek medical attention.
