Advancement in science and technology
has had its benefits for human health. For the past 50 years, we have
added an additional 5 years to the average human life because of the
developments in health and medicine. We have found cures for several
diseases like cancer, malaria, tuberculosis, and the like. However,
at the same time that we are finding cures, bacteria and viruses have
also grown resistant to the medicines we have created. Moreover, we
are still constantly looking for the most effective cures to
ailments, and these cures must not only be effective, they must also
be economical.
The answer that we are looking for may
actually be found right in our own backyard. Herbal medicines are
gaining a rebound in the modern times because of this need for
effective yet economical health solutions. Herbal medicines are
sometimes called traditional or alternative medicines or medical
practices. But what is interesting to note is that, we have already
known the effectiveness of mother nature to bring cures, but it is
only now that it is gaining world wide prominence and popularity.
Why do we see a renaissance for herbal
medicines? We note the following reasons:
1. Science and technology has sidelined
herbal medicines for sometime because at first, we found no abrupt
medical explanation to the use of herbs and plants for curing
diseases. However, science also served its purpose to make herbal
medicines regain their proud history. Clinical tests and experiments
have proven that the herbs have, indeed, medicinal effects.
2. High prices of medicines made by big
pharmaceutical companies made several organizations and governments
rethink their health policies. Herbal medicines are more affordable
than your regular medicines, and they do not sacrifice effectiveness.
3. Herbal medicines – packaged as
herbal teas, capsules, ready-to-drink formulas, syrups – that are
proven to be effective against any conceivable ailments from wounds,
stomach troubles, pulmonary diseases to diabetes, hypertension, and
even cancer. Some are even given as dietary supplements and have low
maintenance requirements. Some are even regarded as miracle medicines
or a cure-all medicine.
Indeed, herbal
medicine deserves its renaissance because of its immense help to
sick people the world over. Very few people nowadays do not believe
the efficacy and multi-facet usefulness of herbal medicines. Doctors
and those in the field of health and medicine testify that they have
already accepted this fact and have started giving prescriptions to
these natural wonders.
