The University of Bologna, located in Italy, is generally regarded as the oldest college in the world. The university was established in 1088, and is still in operation today. Because of its age, the University of Bologna is generally believed to be where the word “university” first originated. The university was one of the most influential in the world and has served as an example for pretty much every institution of higher learning that has come after it.

The University of Oxford is located in the United Kingdom and is regarded as one of the most- if not the most- prestigious college in the entire world. The school was established in 1096 by most regards, although the history of the establishment is murky at best. Advanced teaching can be traced back to 1167, when the school started making revolutionary changes to its curriculum. More or less, the entire history of British politics can be traced back to the University of Oxford.
