Window vs Split AC

These days having at least one air conditioner in a home is somewhat of a norm. In India, the most common air conditioning units for homes are split or window. The first thing a buyer notices once the decision to buy an AC is made is that the market is full of choices. In fact, these days there are so many brands, sizes and features in air conditioners that they can leave most buyers overwhelmed. In such a scenario comparing different types of air conditioning systems and units is a must in order to find one that is ideal for your home. If you too are looking to buy your first air conditioning unit, read on for knowing the difference between a window AC and split AC.
While all air conditioners have three main parts; the compressor, the condenser and the evaporator, the assembly of the parts are different in split AC and window AC. In a split air conditioner the unit is divided into two parts. One is the cooling mechanism which is installed inside the room, while the other is the hot exhaust which is outside. The compressor in the split unit is part of the exhaust system and thus the AC makes less or no noise. On the other hand, in a window air conditioning unit the whole machine is one box usually cubical in shape. The unit is installed in the space of a window and thus named so. In a window AC the face of the unit is inside the room while the other half is on the exterior of the building. Window air conditioners were very common a decade ago, but today most individuals prefer the split AC system.

Noise
In view of the fact that window AC is one cubical unit that consists of all parts of the system, it tends to be noisier as compared to the split AC. There are window air conditioners that make minimal noise, but they will always be noisier than any split units, so if you cannot stand the loud noise, split AC is what you should go for.

Price
If you are working on a budget and need a unit that is comparatively inexpensive buying a window AC may be the right choice. Window AC units are much cheaper in comparison to split AC, regardless of brands. Not only are they the more economical option, but also have low maintenance in comparison to split AC. On the other hand, split AC units are more reliable, especially ones that have advanced technologies such as Scroll. This is because there are fewer parts in the unit.

Energy efficiency
The government has made SEER rating compulsory in electrical appliances including air conditioning units. You will soon realize that the market has split AC systems with 5 star ratings whereas most window AC units are rated very low. This rating is directly proportional to the energy efficiency of your air conditioner. The most energy efficient AC is one with a 5 star rating, while the one with 1 star will consume the most electricity. You may also notice that air conditioners that have 5 star ratings are more costly in comparison to ones that have fewer stars. But take into account the running cost and maintenance on your system at the time of purchase. 5 star rated AC units can save you thousands in electricity bills over the years.

Styling
Since split AC units are the new kid on the block, these are styled and designed nicely. You can find units that enhance the look of your room and match the décor, whereas window ACs are mostly basic.
