HTC seems to have taken the "big is better" adage seriously with the launch of their premium HTC Droid DNA smartphone. The device is said to be grander in all respects – in display, in speed, in performance, and in all-round features. Let us see if the smartphone, which is expected to release on 21st November 2012, actually lives up to the hype by way of a sneak review:
Looks and Design
The Droid DNA is an admirable looking handset characterized by a polished black body, elegantly tapered corners, eye-catching red side panels, and a gargantuan but brilliant display. The smartphone's 141 by 71 by 9.7-millimeter measurements and 138-gram heft impart above average compactness and portability. The latter elements, along with the soft-surfaced back panel, make the Droid DNA comfortable to hold, operate, and travel with. While some users may miss traditional HTC design flourishes, they are sure to find the handset robustly built and capable of withstanding adverse elements.
The chassis houses an array of components such as a micro USB port, front-facing and rear cameras, a micro SD card slot, a loudspeaker, microphones, and a headphone jack along with the power, volume, and camera controls. Lamentably, however, there is no micro SD card slot.
The Droid DNA’s 5-inch display is wonderfully vibrant thanks to the Super LCD 3 touchscreen rendering a superb 1920 by 1080-pixel resolution. Besides the awesome high definition resolution, the display also trumpets a density of 441 pixels per inch and a facility for 16 million colors. What you get owing to all these features is striking colors, superior contrasts, and enviable viewing angles largely caused by the thin all-round screen bezel. Moreover, the display is covered with Gorilla Glass 2 for bolstered strength.
The display embeds HTC's patented Sense UI (version 4+) interface as also multi-touch capacitive functionality making touch operations and navigation a joy to conduct. Below the screen are 3 metallic buttons bearing home, back, and menu navigational commands.
Internal Aspects
The Droid DNA ships with a lively 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon (S4 Pro) processor, a Qualcomm (MDM615m/APQ8064) chipset, and an Adreno 320 graphics card. These components are augmented by the provision of 2GB RAM and make the handset immensely adept at processing applications and multitasking.
The Droid DNA has 2G (CDMA and GSM), 3G (quad band HSDPA and CDMA), and also 4G LTE networking abilities – these features ought to ensure impeccable call clarity and expeditious data transfers.
Android's Jelly Bean (version 4.1) operating system is included to provide a high-quality user experience. Importantly, HTC has offered an option to upgrade to the freshest Jelly Bean interface.
There is 16 GB of internal memory on board which, sadly, is not expandable as there is no micro SD card slot.
The embedded 2020 mAh Li-Ion battery is also slightly disappointing; it needed to be more powerful to sustain the handset's premium features.
Cameras
The Droid DNA ships with an 8-megapixel rear camera with facets like f2.0 lens, HD video chat, 1080-pixel recording, simultaneous video and imaging, face recognition, and quick launch.
A front-facing 2.1-megapixel camera is also included.
Verdict
The HTC Droid DNA will be available for just under USD 200 and is a compelling purchase.
