How To Speed Up Off-page Penalty Changes

The key point to understand with an off-page penalty - for example over optimization - is it takes a while for Google to re-index and re-evaluate links. To understand this you have to know, when new links get discovered, evaluated and weighted, how the algorithm will consider your current authority score and add to it over time. It won't necessarily re index and re-evaluate your site every time. It depends on your link velocity and PR or when there is major change to your homepage which would force a re-index and re-evaluation of your site, the resulting change being indexed up to 2 weeks later. A good indication is to check the Google cache and then you'll know whether its been picked up.

To do this you would simply search for your site and then click the mouse over the cache section this will show you exactly when the page was last refreshed in the index. Note: Google seems to make changes to the cache of your homepage and the title completely independently. So when you check your site, hover your mouse above the page title so you can see the title change (if you have amended it)

To speed up a complete re-evaluation of all your links you should completely change your homepage. Not just content but layout as well. This is reasonably easy if you are using WordPress - you can simply move your widgets around and copy your homepage content to another page temporarily and rewrite your new homepage. (This includes changing authors, titles, descriptions any other Meta data.) Another method to be used in combination is to change your Geo settings. In Google Webmaster tools you can set what region you want your site targeted towards.

The default is global - so if you are in the US, then the chances are its set to global and Google will use your sites’ IP address to decide where to target your site. You can set this to US explicitly and it will force Google to perform a re-evaluation of the link pattern and score and in 2-3 weeks you should see the change have an affect and be indexed. However leave it in this temporary state for at least 6 weeks so the site will stabilize in Google’s eyes.
