Are you an aspiring artist or do you just like appreciating human creativity? Either way, you should consider making one of these expos or festivals the centre around which you arrange your next vacation. When art lovers around the world come together and appreciate art collectively, it is not only fun and exciting, but helps inspire and surprise you.
Festival of the Arts
Held annually in the first weekend of June in Michigan, USA, this festival showcases thousands of artists’ creations. Paintings, dancers, musicians, sculptors, poets actors and whole array of performers show off their stuff to half a million people from all over the world. 20,000 volunteers help organise this festival and successfully manage to pull-off a world-class festival full of artistic and community spirit. It lasts for three days and is widely regarded as one of the world’s best artistic festivals.
Artsfest
UK’s biggest free arts festival, Artsfest is held annually at Birmingham, offering over 600 events. An urban arts festival that lasts 3 days, it’s open to the public completely free and promotes artists from all vocations. The atmosphere here is saturated in all things artistic as there’s something for everyone and the wealth of exhibitions and performances is astounding. One minute, you could be listening to poetry, while the next, you might be watching hip hop dancers or theatrical performances, while a nearby sculptor unveils his latest creations. Truly a must for any art-lover.
Uitmarkt Festival
In Amsterdam the cultural season begins in August and the longstanding tradition of open this season is the Uitmarkt Festival. Literally meaning ‘outmarket’, it’s basically a free showcase of the performances available for the coming year should someone ‘go out’. Theatres open their doors and offer free performances of ballet, theatre, cabarets, film and any other performing arts exhibition. This is perfect for the art-lovers who appreciate the performing arts more than the visual arts.
Barcelona Design Festival
This festival has aimed and successfully achieved in putting Barcelona on the map- making it renowned as a world capital in design. It brings together entrepreneurs, professionals, designers, engineers and the public and shows off cool new innovations each year. It offers a number of talks, showcases, tours and workshops with an aim to integrate technology and society and inspire new designs for the benefit of all. Less artistic than the aforementioned, this festival is still fun and engaging but perhaps more suitable for those interested in practical applications of human creativity and ingenuity.
Expo 2015
Obviously not a yearly event as not every year is 2015, it is however one of a long series of design expos simply named ‘Expo’ which is held in different countries and have different themes each time. They are aimed at completely revolutionising and innovating technology for a common, international goal. This expo will be held in Milan in 2015 and the theme will be Feeding the planet, energy for life. It focuses on technology, innovation, engineering and design’s capability to address the world issue of securing food for all people. This expo, and others like this one (like Expo 2008 whose theme was water) are great for those who appreciate design and creativity and are socially conscious.
