Survival Tips for the Art Tourist

Art museums, art festivals and evening art walks are wonderful opportunities to enjoy both art and local color during your vacation.  Organizing your stay around exhibits and art events in a particular location will ensure you an inspiring vacation time. There is almost always a huge assortment of exciting and thought-provoking art on display in the cultural centers of every country. Here are some tips for seeing them happily:

Art Museum Exhibitions

Once you've decided what type of art work you would like to enjoy, research for museums that offer exhibitions displaying those artists, styles, or mediums - this will inform your travel plans. Finding out the exact locations and hours of the art museums you want to visit is the next practical step and by now, you should have notes.  Don't forget to print them out, rather than keep them in your phone or laptop - you may end up with little or no phone or internet service once you're en route! To survive your tour of museums:
  • Take some bottled water with you and wear comfortable shoes. Even if you take a taxi from your hotel, you'll have miles of exhibition hallways, esplanades, and possibly steps to maneuver before you're done.
  • Since many museums offer limited (or expensive) cafe menus, so you may want to take some filling fruit and nut snacks, or a nutritious meal replacement shake with enough protein to fight off hunger, fatigue, and grumbling tummies.  Withstanding the lines to see your favorite Mona Lisa is always worth it, but it can be more exerting than you'd think.
Art Festivals

Lots of vacation destination cities and towns host art festivals on a seasonal basis. There are festivals for all artistic interests; ranging from fine art paintings to folk art, tapestry, woodworking, glass work, and photography.
  • Because festivals also offer an irregular menu of dining options, you may want to take some crackers, nuts and cheese with you in order to satiate your hunger and enjoy the whole day there.
  • Either sunscreen or a hat is a must if you're on holiday in a hot, sunny climate.
Evening Art Walks

Evening art walks are another fun and fanciful way to enjoy the cultural offerings of a town or city. If you are on a date and want to do something out of the ordinary, evening art walks can also be quite romantic. Many locales offer these art walks on a seasonal basis.
  • If you find one that interests you, do remember to wear stylish, but comfortable walking shoes that will help you survive several hours on your feet.
Art museums, art festivals and evening art walks all offer a wide assortment of art to view at your leisure. You don't want to hurry and you shouldn't feel pressured to leave the fun just because it's dinnertime.  Consider bringing a meal replacement bar or snack along for each event in case the venue or the food offerings are limited. And if the weather is rainy or cold, be brave - most art gallerists will welcome you inside.  You may find a warm crowd, a nice glass of local wine, and, who knows... an undiscovered Mona Lisa?!
