Conceptualizing Information into Infographics Design

 1.    Visualize Each Element of Information – The graphic representation that you use to depict each element of information must accurately depict that information, otherwise the infographic is useless.  Some of your options include diagrams, tables, graphs, charts, maps, and a particularly common infographic, lists.  Each one is suitable for specific types of information, so the information you will be presenting will be the number one indicator of what type of infographic you should use.  Taking time to visualize how you see the information will help you to choose the right way to represent the information.

2.    Assess the Multiple Infographics for a Logical Flow – If you are using more than one infographic to represent a bulk of information, then you have another decision to make. Not only do you have to choose the right infographics to represent the information, but you will also have to be sure that the infographics flow in a logical manner in order to make the information comprehensible as a whole.  With most information, there is a logical beginning and end.  Accurately representing how multiple bits of information develop to form one large piece of information, and where the information starts and ends, is much more difficult that representing the information itself.

3.    Seek Feedback and Make Changes – After you have put together your final product it is important to get feedback, so that you can determine the need for changes that may make the information more comprehensible.  This is where friends and family come in handy, but it is also important to seek feedback from other professionals who understand the importance of infographics as well.  Advice from a professional perspective can help you to produce a much more effective final product.  Although, the advice you get from a layperson is important as well, as it is likely people of this group that the infographic representations of information are ultimately for.

4.    Produce the Final Infographics Product and Assess Effectiveness – Once you have exhausted all opportunities of improving your infographic representation of your information it is time to produce the final product and put it to use.  Hopefully you will see your hard work pay off.  It is important to closely assess the effectiveness of your infographics in the first few weeks so that you can learn lessons for future infographics development.  The effectiveness of the infographics at work can be gauged by the increase in traffic or sales that may result from presenting information in a more comprehensible format.

Infographics, or information graphics, are designed to make information simpler to comprehend.  There are multiple choices regarding how to represent information with infographics, and, in a world where infographics are quickly growing in popularity, it is important to choose the right one for a specific type of information.  If you do, you too may have the opportunity to witness the power of infographics in the modern world.
