Do You Really Need to Hire an Interior Designer?

Your home’s décor should reflect your style and outlook on life. If you take a look around, and notice that your home is lacking in personality, or if your life circumstances have changed, you may need to hire an interior designer or decorator. Some people are born with an eye for colors and finishes, while others aren’t. Read on to find out whether you need to hire a professional interior designer.

  • Does your home reflect who you are? Anyone can buy or rearrange furniture, buy ledge and brace doors, or repaint a room. On the other hand, an interior designer will help you find out your personal style, and use your lifestyle to determine what finishes, fabrics and textures will be the best fit. Designers can help you plan your space around your life, not the other way around.
  • Do you imagine what your space could look like? If you were given an empty white room, could you put together a warm, inviting and stylish space? Many people have good imagination, but not all are good at translating that imagination to reality. If you fall into that group, an interior designer can help you bring your vision to life.
  • What’s your reasoning behind hiring a professional? Your home is your single biggest investment, and redecorating it yourself could mean more of an investment in terms of both time and money. If you’re weighing the benefits and disadvantages, keep in mind that an interior designer’s expertise can be well worth the expense.
  • Do you want to be hands-on, or would you rather let the designer take care of everything? Most interior designers will offer a free, no-obligation consultation where they will come to your home, assess your design needs, and discuss the various options. Some designers have multiple price points, where you can do some of the work yourself, and bring them in for the “heavy lifting”, like choosing and installing internal oak doors. Others will take care of everything, leaving you with nothing to do but enjoy the results. If you want to have more of a hand in the process, you may not need as much help, but if you’re not the DIY type, you should hire an interior designer.
  • Are you an “empty nester”? If your children have grown up and moved out on your own, you’ll have more time (and money!) for entertaining. Not everyone knows how to pull together a stylish, formal look, and an interior designer can help you do just that.
Deciding whether to hire an interior designer can seem hard, but it really isn’t. Making the right choice means figuring out how much help you need, and what you can handle yourself. If it’s within your budget, hiring a pro can be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.
