This week, photography lovers in Scotland, England, Norway, Canada and Alaska observed their skies glow because the largest solar radiation storm in seven years made magnificent auroras. The Earth's magnetic field directs this torrent of charged particles coming from such storms in the direction of the poles. Interactions with the atmosphere create the wavering lines of lovely color generally known as auroras, or Northern Lights.
