WordPress 3.0 - Multiple Sites, One Owner

A newer released version of a product means more new features to use. For the case of WordPress 3.0, the latest version of one of today’s most popular blogging tools available, this means even more things you can do. Among these is the MultiSite feature, granting ability to host multiple websites under one network. This means you won’t have to install WordPress all over again if you ever want a new website; you can install them from your existing site, allowing control over them from the parent site.

How to start
To do this, you must have WordPress 3.0 installed. Install it now if you do not have it yet. Once you have it installed, open the wp-config.file found in your site’s root directory and add the following code:

define('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true);

Once that is done, go to the WP dashboard, then “Tools”, and then click on “Network”. You will be shown a window that will show your installation paths, as well as a warning, asking you to enable the mod_rewrite feature in your Apache server, despite you using a WordPress server and that mod_rewrite should have been enabled. If you want to deal with this one, contact your hosting authority about it. You should see a window that asks how you want your WordPress network to use either sub-domains or sub-directories. You can only choose between either one and you can’t take it back. Below the window should be the network details field. Place the details you want and click on “Install”.

For the next window, you should see instructions on how to complete the installation process. Here is what you do:

  1. Create the directory “blogs.dir” under the wp-content directory. This directory will store the uploaded media of the new sites.
  2. You should get a code. Paste this code in the wp-config.php file, above the line “/* That’s all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */”
  3. Below that will be another code. Place this code in the .htaccess file under /public_html directory, which will replace the current WordPress rules.

Once you finish up, you will have to relog back into WordPress. Once you do so, you will see another menu called “Super Admin” above your dashboard. You now have the ability to install and host multiple sites.

How to add a new site in your network
The Super Admin you just added is different from the normal dashboard you have as this menu gives you the ability to add new sites, create a new user, manage themes, and more. To add a new site, click on “Sites” under “Super Admin”. Under the “Add Site” field, type the site name, the admin username and the email address, then click “Add Site”. The new site will be added, with the address of http://*yourdomainhere*.com/*nameofthesite*.

The normal dashboard lets you control the parent site; while the Super Admin menu lets you control the sites you created. To manage a site, go to the “Sites” tab under the “Super Admin” menu, then choose the site you want to manage or edit from the list of sites under your control, and click on “Backend”.
