Asus has come out with VivoBook S400CA-UH51, the latest from the VivoBook series introduced by Asus few months ago. This new addition to the Asus family can qualify to be the most easiest and economical method of getting a good Ultrabook working on Windows 8.
Windows 8 works best on touch screen devices, so it becomes important for other non-touch screen devices to device workarounds to navigate on Windows 8 powered devices. But VivoBook S400CA-UH51 is the first device that effortlessly integrates the workings of a touch screen with complete ultrabook functionalities. Let’s look at Asus VivoBook S400CA-UH51 more closely and find out what works and what doesn’t for this ultrabook.
Design:
The VivoBook S400CA-UH51 looks just like any other standard laptop with its 14-inch touch sensitive screen and a decent 1,366 X 768 screen resolution. Coming with a matt finished silver keyboard and a brushed metal covering, this ultrabook looks stylish. The screen, needless to say, looks vibrant and bright. Although the screen’s viewing angles are not as great as they would normally be with a better IPS panel, they should suffice for users. Although a few may find that the 1366 X 768 resolution doesn’t qualify for a 1080p screen resolution, most of our test videos played out just fine on this 720p screen as they would on a 1080p screen.
The ultrabook looks sturdy and solid without any noticeable wobbling when working on the touchscreen. Having 0.8 X 13.5 X 9.5 inch dimensions, this ultrabook weighs close to 4.4 pounds. Although it has a tapered chassis and a slim look, it is thicker and heavier. The added girth and weight is due to the fact that this ultrabook accommodates a touchscreen.
Features and Performance:
VivoBook S400CA-UH51 ultrabook comes with i5 processer (Intel Core), 4GB memory, a hard drive with 500GB space, an HD Graphics 4000 card, and 24GB caching memory. With this kind of power, this ultrabook wakes from sleep within a few seconds and boots into the Home Screen in a matter of 12 seconds.
The black full-sized chiclet keyboard, even though isn’t backlit, is comfortable to work on. While we are talking about keyboards, let’s put everything on paper. Although not a deal breaker, there is a small issue with VivoBook’s keyboard. On all keyboards that we have used so far the function keys on top of the keyboards first fulfill their primary function of sleep, brightness, volume etc. Then you’ll use the function keys along with the Fn key. But on VivoBook S400CA-UH51, the function keys offer their secondary functions first. That is, even to be able to access the primary functions of the function keys you’ll have to hold down the Fn key first.
There is a one-piece trackpad that comes along with this ultrabook. This trackpad is located below the keyboard and is marked with left-right clicks. You can use the trackpad or the ten finger capacitive touchscreen. There is a utility called the Smart Gesture, that when turned off helps you work on your trackpad (that works like a mouse) instead of the multi touch trackpad.
Final word:
Finally, the VivoBook S400CA-UH51 comes with a high performing processor, good enough storage space, a great touchscreen for a good price. Although this ultrabook works well on almost all fronts, the fact that the battery life is a major letdown can’t be denied. If you are willing to let go of the battery issue, then this Ultrabook is well worth your money.
