Eject and disconnect the iPod or iPhone

When iTunes has finished loading songs onto the iPod or iPhone, you can disconnect it unless it’s an iPod you’re using in disk mode (or you need to continue recharging its battery). ITunes displays the message saying that the update is complete and “OK to disconnect.” The iPod displays the message “OK to disconnect.” When you see this message, you can unplug the iPod from the cable or from your computer.

If you’re using an iPod in disk mode, however, iTunes doesn’t prepare the iPod for disconnection after it finishes loading songs. Instead, it leaves the iPod mounted on your computer as a disk so that you can transfer files to and from it manually. When the iPod is in disk mode like this, it displays the message “Eject Before Disconnecting.” In Mac OS X, an icon for the iPod appears on the desktop unless you have specifically chosen to exclude it (see the “Prevent the iPod from Appearing on the Desktop in Mac OS X” sidebar). See Chapter 12 for more information about disk mode.

At this writing, the iPhone and iPod touch have no disk mode, so you can safely remove either at any time that it is not showing the Sync In Progress screen. When the iPhone or iPod touch is showing this screen, you can drag your finger across the slider at the bottom of the screen to cancel the sync—for example, if you receive a phone call while the sync is running on the iPhone.

If you forget to eject the iPod or iPhone before you log out of Mac OS X, you shouldn’t need to log back in to eject the device. If it’s an iPod classic or an iPod nano, make sure that the screen is displaying the “OK to disconnect” message, and then disconnect the iPod. If it’s an iPod shuffle, make sure that the orange or amber light isn’t blinking. If it’s an iPhone or iPod touch, make sure it’s not displaying the Sync In Progress screen.

Prevent the iPod from Appearing on the Desktop in Mac OS X
When the iPod is mounted in disk mode, it appears on the Mac OS X desktop by default. You can prevent it from appearing, but doing so also prevents CDs and DVDs from appearing. Here’s how:

1. Click the Finder button on the toolbar, or click the desktop.
2. Choose Finder | Preferences to display the Finder Preferences window.
3. Click the General tab if it isn’t already displayed.
4. Clear the CDs, DVDs, And iPods check box.
5. Click the Close button on the window, or choose File | Close Window or press -W, to close the window.
